Plant Reference Books These are the books you will turn to again and again to learn the characteristics, care, culture, propagation, and more about the plants in your garden and the plants you'd like to grow. Dirr's Manual of Woody Landscape Plants is the professional reference of choice for trees and shrubs. Allan Armitage is the master of herbaceous plants. Garden Perennials, Garden Annuals and Native Plants have plenty of photos to help you design your garden. Herbaceous Perennial Plants and the Manual of Annuals, etc., have few photos but are packed with information that horticulture professionals need. House Plant Expert is an excellent guide to indoor plants. Rick Darke's Color Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses makes an often confusing subject clear. Weeds of the Northeast is by far the best reference on weeds in this region. Fruit and Vegetable Gardening Books Vegetable gardening is a challenge to get the most delicious fresh produce out of a small space with a minimum of work. Mel Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening is a classic method that really works, and Cubed Foot Gardening adds the vertical element to Bartholomew's techniques. Small fruits reap great rewards with less effort, and Gough and Reich offer plenty of information and possibilities. Ortho's All About... books give the necessary information to start a home orchard or grow tropical fruit indoors. Pest and Disease Reference Books What do you do when a plant gets "sick"? How do you know what is wrong, and how to fix it? These references are indispensable for plant treatment. Diagnosis is not easy, even for experts. Start with the Ortho Problem Solver in the professional or home versions. Professionals will want more information, and Insects That Feed on Trees and Shrubs, Diseases of Trees and Shrubs, and Abiotic Disorders of Landscape Plants are the industry standards. Ellis's Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Insect and Disease Control is the best manual for alternative organic solutions. Peterson's field guides to eastern Trees and Wildflowers are great for identifying those "volunteers" in your yard, and Scotts Guide to the Identification of Grasses helps you recognize your turf species as well as weedy grasses.
